What is a Dental Crown and How Do I Know if I Need a Dental Crown?
If you have a tooth that is cracked, chipped, severely decayed, or heavily filled, it’s likely that a dental crown will be a good course of action to protect and restore it. Customised to match the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth, the crown will fit over your tooth to secure and seal out any harmful bacteria as well as prevent any additional damage from occurring.
Other ways you can tell if a dental crown is going to be necessary to fix your individual problem include:
You have a broken tooth
Your tooth is cracked or fractured
Your filling is too big and as a result, your tooth is now significantly weaker
You’ve recently had a root canal
You had dental implants placed and need a custom restoration
What Are the Benefits of Dental Crowns?
Improved appearance
Increased confidence
Protects your teeth from further damage or fracture
Durable enough to withstand average wear and tear
Customised to blend in beautifully with your smile
Top Care Tips for Crowns
Dental crowns are designed to last anywhere between 5 and 15 years, but much of that depends on how well you take care of your crown and surrounding natural teeth. It’s important to remember that just because your crown cannot decay doesn’t mean your remaining tooth structure cannot. Some tips to care for your custom restoration include:
Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day for a full two minutes.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush as directed by your dental hygienist or a power brush with extra soft bristles placing it at the gum line and moving it slowing along. Avoid horizontal scrubbing.
Floss at least once a day.
Rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash or water pick.
Keep your regular six-month dental checkup and cleaning appointments with us.
Avoid eating hard, chewy, crunchy foods, as they can be damaging to your new dental crown and natural tooth structure.
We use Trios 3D imaging in our office. We scan instead of using gooey impressions of the past. To capture the prepared tooth and communicate with dental laboratory who will then fabricate the crown.
